Today, Lauryn Hill released a new song titled "Black Rage" and has dedicated it to the people of Ferguson, MO. Hill has been performing this song in various incarnations for the past couple years and says that this is a rough draft that she recorded in her living room long before Ferguson was making headlines.
The song is an ironic reinvention of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music. The sound is scratchy and it's clear the lyrics haven't been perfected yet, but it lends this "sketch," as she calls it, an immediacy that is gripping and relevant.
"BLACK RAGE is founded on two-thirds a person
Rapings and beatings and suffering that worsens,
Black human packages tied up in strings,
BLACK RAGE can come from all these kinds of things."
